Margo Field Biography
I began to bead in 1991 - when I first "discovered" beads. Since then - it has been a rare day when I didn’t do something with my beads. I started teaching beadwork in 1993 and opened Poppy Field Bead Company in 1995. Beadwork at its best is a wonderful, colorful and expressive art form — I enjoy teaching the art to others.
I have always needed some sort of artistic outlet in my life. I have tried painting - oil and Chinese water color, calligraphy, sewing and a few other "crafty" things - but when I got my hands on beads in 1991 - I could really hear them talking to me. In reducing their pharmacy staff in 1998, my hospital employer did me a great favor by laying me off. I had already established Poppy Field, and now I was totally free to give it my full attention. My husband is a tremendous help - and very understanding. I also want to thank all my friends who have supported me.My favorite soap box thing is my campaign to have truly fine beadwork given the credit it deserves as fine art. But there also is another component to beadwork. The main reason that I teach beadwork to others is because I feel that everyone has a creative spirit in them that needs to be nourished. All of my students are artists to the best of their abilities and desires. Teaching beadwork is a way of learning about myself and others. I am a much happier and fulfilled person today than I was before I found beads.
The peyote stitch is my favorite. It offers so many possibilities for the type of work I do. However, it was definitely my LEAST favorite when I was learning how to bead. Just plain confusing at first, I give credit to Judy Otero, who tutored me with great patience until I got it right! I teach at my store "Poppy Field Bead Company" - located in Albuquerque. We teach a basic beading class which covers peyote, brick and embellishment around cabochons. We offer over 30 other classes in intermediate to advance techniques. The majority of these classes are taught by individual artists who created the piece. Paula Adams and Bobbie Yoakum, as well as myself, are all award winning bead artists who teach their designs at Poppy Field. It is wonderful to see some of the past class students becoming teachers here, as they develop their own special styles and techniques. We are continually coming up with new "stuff"
